Henrietta STUART

Henrietta Stuart’s practice explores how painting can convey the mystery and atmosphere of landscape and place. Through abstraction, she seeks to evoke a sensory and emotional connection to landscape without resorting to direct representation. Her work investigates the underlying resonances that define a place - its layered histories, shifting present, and possible futures.

Henrietta writes “Landscape lies at the centre of our experience; it grounds us and shapes our sense of belonging. The scents that linger, the movement of wind around a corner, the hum of civilization or the murmur of water - these elements form an intricate part of our perception of place. Landscape, in all its forms, is woven into our collective memory and identity.”

Henrietta’s recent collection looks at landscape through this lens. After her recent stay in Australia the paintings reflect the vastness of this landscape and the feeling of being a tiny part of the cosmos. She is “still surprised at how recognisable the landscape of Australia felt with echos of the familiar”.

Henrietta studied BA Fine Art at Newcastle University, where she graduated in 1988 with a 1st Class degree. From 1988-92 she lived and painted in Marseilles, France. She returned to the UK and worked in the Chiswick Studios (1993-97) and the Chertsey Studios (1997-2003). Between 2003-11 Henrietta made the Languedoc, France, her home. During her time living in France, she spent time travelling and working in Greece staying on the island of Ithaca for two prolonged periods. Henrietta returned to the UK in 2011 and settled in West London where she now has a studio in Wimbledon. From September 2024 she spent six months living and working in Australia. In 2025-2026 she completed the Turps Banana Off Site Programme.

Henrietta’s works are to be found in collections in New York, Houston, Mexico, Australia, Paris, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, and Germany as well as throughout the UK.
